Singleton C.E. Primary School is a happy and caring community in which good manners, excellent behaviour and a desire to continuously improve and learn are expected from everybody. We are a Church of England School teaching Christian values and beliefs. We also promote awareness and tolerance of, and respect for other religions and cultures.

Learning to Read

Approach to reading at Singleton CE School

A daily phonics lesson takes place in KS1 following the Read Write Inc. scheme. Children are taught a sound a day and learn to say it, hear it, write it and match it to objects. We also focus on rhyme & alliteration so children can follow the pattern in sounds.

As they move through Year 1 & 2 children learn different spelling patterns such as ai- ow- ight-, etc. They read books with words containing these letter patterns to support the process and develop writing skills.
